Bioremediation is an environmentally friendly method to clean up the environment using microorganisms, plants and biological processes to detoxify or eliminate pollutants from the environment. It has been broadly used in the removal of pollutants such as organic compounds, heavy metals, oils, radioactive and emerging contaminants . There are many techniques available for optimizing the degradation process such as bio-augmentation, biostimulation, phytoremediation, biofiltration and nano bioremediation. In recent years, with the development of genetic engineering and CRISPR technology, the degradation ability of microorganisms and plants to harmful substances has increased. The following paper will focus on the concept of bioremediation, its principle, methodologies, applications and future directions.

Introduction
Recent years have witnessed an increase in pollution due to various reasons. Contaminants such as pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, radioactive materials, and various other types of pollutants are causing harm to ecosystems and posing significant health risks to the environment. To add to this accidents such as oil spills and those that add harmful chemicals to the environment are on a rise. While chemical and physical methods are not so effective in removing contaminants in trace amounts, bioremediation can ensure degradation of such chemicals by uptake by microorganisms and subsequent conversion to harmless products.
