The Genetics of Cancer: Mutation To Targeted Therapy by Vivaan Makharia

Abstract

Cancer is a condition caused by mutation in genes called protooncogenes and tumour suppressor genes together . This condition has characteristics which causes cells to proliferate in an uncontrollable manner ,sometimes spreading to other organs and causing mortality. In this review I aim at exploring different types of genetic mutations and genes they affect for causing cancer. This is a small review and not an extensive one as the research topic is vast .I have also researched on methodologies like DNA sequencing which help to pinpoint the cause of exact gene mutation. Lastly I have researched targeted therapies, immunotherapies and mRNA vaccines for personalised treatment of cancer. While these therapies offer promising results in clinical trials ,side effects of such therapies need to be further studied.

Introduction

In today’s modern world of advanced technology and rapidly developing medical science, cancer remains one of the most feared and challenging diseases worldwide. Cancer not only causes premature mortality but only economic burden due to loss of productivity. In this research study I aim to review literature for causes of cancer at the genetic level and explore recent strategies for combating cancer.
